In this hurry-up world where craftsmanship and quality often seem like luxuries from another era, the Chatham Sign Shop has built a reputation for creating fine carved gold leaf signs at affordable prices.
In our workshop in the heart of downtown Chatham, local artisans start with patterns handed down from the early wood carvers and use the finest materials - 23 karat gold leaf and durable sign enamels - to create signs that stand the tests of time and weather.

Individualized motifs

Any of the 3D motifs that are applied to our signs can be purchased individually.
These are molded in resin from the original carving.
Then they are gilded with 23 karat gold leaf, or optionally, they can be left plain, or painted white or silver.
Plain motifs will come with a primer coat.
Most common is a simple stud that protrudes from the back of the motif that is placed in a predrilled hole and secured with epoxy glue.
The second method and simplest is 3M VHB tape that is self-adhered to the back of the motif.

What are the signs made of?
A. Our signs are made from a waterproof wood composite that holds the paint, will not absorb water, and will not rot.
We also use teak, fir, or mahogany with a stain and varnish finish that will show off the wood grain as well as the gold leaf.
We also make economical utlity signs using computer cut vinyl on a pvc substrate.
What finish do you put on the signs?
